Pat has been fortunate enough to grow up in beautiful Monmouth County, NJ surrounded by his loving parents, sister, and three brothers. He earned degrees in Finance and Philosophy from Providence College and his MBA from Georgian Court University.
Since graduating from Providence College, Pat has gained valuable experience at launching a few local start-ups. He is currently working with a young and promising startup (Hyer) that’s envisioned to be the “Uber for On-Demand Labor.”
Pat has decided there is no better time to give back to local students who share the same characteristics that he had at a young age.
Although fortunate enough to be able to experience some of the most well-known institutions in the U.S., he discovered there was a void in the educational system. This was the gap between the learning of theory with no experience.
As a volunteer coach for eight years at a local high school, Pat realized that several of the students he was coaching could thrive in the business world if given the proper direction and support. Pat is taking this realization into a reality with the formation of JSSS. Students here will be guided into starting up their own companies and will learn from experience.
Jim Whelan, the “I Don’t Rest” man, is most prominently known for his commercial general contracting company, IDR Construction. With 10 years of industry experience and his strong, relentless work ethic he founded IDR in 2008 and ran the business out of his home office. Over the course of the next seven years Jim’s solid reputation and dedication to hard work won him substantial clients; from Red Bank developers to corporate chains to restaurant and retail businesses. IDR Construction has proudly resided on Maple Ave. in Red Bank, NJ since 2015,and has developed into a fully-staffed administrative office as well as a field labor force.
IDR Construction was not delicately crafted based on a textbook education, but rather on the sheer determination of someone who saw the undeniable value in experience. Growing up, Jim spent years at a time living between New Jersey and Florida. From the early age of 14 he worked to help support his family in the Sunshine State. His flexible homeschooling schedule allowed for 35-40 hour work weeks, starting in grocery stores, then to all facets of the restaurant industry, then to his passion: construction.
He was quickly willing to dedicate 75+ hours a week to exploring new trades and honing his skills. It wasn’t long before he realized something he still practices today: If you want to be great at something, you commit yourself to it. If you dedicate twice as much time as everyone else, you’re going to learn twice as fast, or twice as much. The value in that mindset is what sent Jim on a skyrocket to success.
Having seen the direct success this mindset brought, Jim has spent recent years applying it to other interests and endeavors like real estate, restaurant and hospitality partnerships, design consulting, property management, and even a tech-startup. The lessons that Jim learned on his
path to success in construction are the same lessons which have given him the freedom and confidence to expand and tackle other ventures.
Jim’s passion for opportunity, growth and success doesn’t end at the boundaries of his own business; the lessons he’s learned are something he consistently teaches his employees, while inviting them to take the first steps of a new venture with him for their own experience. For example, two construction employees are currently assisting Jim with a tech-startup; conversing with a London-based product development agency on a weekly basis, and reaching out to international manufacturers.
